“Whut yew doin’, squirt?” the skins hollered. “Hey, look, little big-eyes is fixin’ t’ ride the salamander! Hey, squirt Hig! Hig! don’t hang yore feet over or yew’ll git floor burns! Hig! Hig! Hig!”

Then the whole gang started squealing and cackling again, and they did it so hard they forgot to watch. And when they stopped and looked around again, Crosley and me had vanished!

“Thet’s cockeyed,” snarled the yellows. “Hey, salamander, where yew at?”

We didn’t make a sound, and the iguanas started searching all over everywhere.

“Hey, squirt,” squawked the blacks, “we ain’t playin’ hide-n-seek. Show yore stupid self!”

We didn’t make a peep. Then the yellows and blacks looked under the double-decker beds, and the skins ran in the kitchen and looked everywhere inside the lizard cheese closet and even in the big jellybean pot but nobody could find me and Crosley.

“S HEESH!” they all hissed. “Them two’s hidin’ someplace in our own hideout, an’ we don’t lak it a-tall!”

We had got out the I-ain’t-here doodad is what it was. And as soon as we were invisible, we had snuck in the kitchen and were sitting in there waiting.

“Those slimebags called me little,” I whispered.

“Button up,” Crosley whispered back. “Yeah, I heard ’em. Just keep still an’ tell me the plan.”

“Okay,” I whispered. “But there’s one thing I can’t figure out.”

“Run it by me,” Crosley whispered back. “Ain’t I your Night Buddy?”

“I sure hope so,” I whispered. “Okay, first of all ”

The iguanas tore all over the place searching. The yellows looked under the table and chairs, and one yellow even climbed up and looked in the giant chandelier while a black held a ladder for him. The skins checked the kitchen again, then ran up the tunnel to search.
